Would you carpool with someone that didn’t have a drivers license, vehicle registration, or insurance? Probably not.
Here’s a quick look at why hiring a licensed drone pilot is so important:
FAA Penalties
Hiring an unlicensed pilot opens you up to compounding FAA fines at $75,000 per regulatory violation. If you hired an unlicensed pilot and they broke two FAA rules in addition to flying without a Part 107 license, you could be fined up to $225,000 by the FAA.
Insurance & Liability
An unlicensed pilot is ineligible to purchase drone liability insurance, and drone operations are not covered by standard liability coverage. Hiring an unlicensed pilot also means liability can be transferred to you and your company, so you pay for the damages — not them.
Rules & Safety
There are many rules and regulations that you must learn in order to obtain a Part 107 license. It’s basically the rules of the road (or sky) for drones. Like a driving test, it isn’t overly difficult or expensive to learn the material and take the exam, so not knowing the rules or getting the license is simply unacceptable.
